In this course, you’ll examine the goals and values of Ashworth College, time management, creating a realistic weekly and monthly study schedule, the nature and purpose of assessments, how to study effectively to prepare for and take an online examination, and developing the skill sets necessary for success in the twenty-first century.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Identify skills needed to be a confident and independent online learner.
  • Familiarize yourself with the goals and structure of Ashworth College’s Landscape Design course.
  • Coordinate your learning style with time management skills and assessment preparation.
  • Develop skills with construction technologies related to landscape design.

Lesson Group 1: Introduction to Landscape and Plants

Lesson Group 1: Introduction to Landscape and Plants 

This course will begin by developing a knowledge base with principles and research elements with the goal of preparing and developing landscape designs. You’ll also explore vertical design components along with building codes and regulations. Lastly, this course will focus on identifying and selecting plants, following the principles of planting design.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Prepare a landscape design based upon client input, topographical conditions, and building codes.
  • Create a thematic design incorporating landscaping features such as plantings, pathways, and/or patios.
  • Consider vertical design materials with the overall landscaping plan.
  • Examine plants and planting styles to create an effective planting design.

Lesson Group 2: Designing the Landscape 

This course introduces drafting tools and presentation graphics for mastering the steps in the landscape design process. In developing a master plan, you’ll grow these drawing and design skills through textured ground planes, controlled lines, proper lettering, and key graphic symbols. Then, this course will center upon the opportunities for utilizing color, section drawings, and computer software programs to enhance and finalize landscape designs.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Extend knowledge and use of drafting tools used with landscape designs.
  • Master proper techniques for using lines, letters, and symbols.
  • Develop a master plan arising from proper drawing and labeling techniques.
  • Finalize landscape plans by applying appropriate colors, section drawings, and design software elements.

Lesson Group 3: Starting and Managing a Landscape Business 

This course analyzes the business components necessary for managing a landscaping business, from equipment inventory to legal concerns. You’ll also consider the installation and maintenance of grass and plants, which includes study of soil types, pruning techniques, and irrigation equipment.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Examine the processes and requirements with managing a small landscape business.
  • Create a plan for grass and plant care, including maintenance, fertilization, and irrigation systems.
  • Create a plan with caring for trees and shrubs, including pruning and irrigation.
  • Develop an understanding of soil types and testing.

Program Description

The Landscape Design program is designed to provide you with knowledge of landscape design and business practices, encompassing preparation and maintenance processes of landscape planning, which incorporates tools and equipment, structural elements, and plant management.

Program Objectives

After completing the Landscape Design program, you’ll be able to do the following:

  1. Describe how to interpret the visual elements used during the overall landscape design process, including drawings and graphics tools, and apply this knowledge to the development of personal design concepts.
  2. Explain how to visualize the landscape site and design space as outdoor rooms and apply standard design principles to enhance the appearance of residential and commercial outdoor space.
  3. Apply mathematical and computer-based solutions to both the design and business-related functions of the landscaping design process.
  4. Identify various plants, flowers, surface materials, and enclosures used to create and enhance exterior design spaces and describe the many applications and configurations used for these materials.
  5. Identify and define essential business concepts utilized by landscaping professionals to operate successful businesses, such as the generation and interpretation of contracts and specifications, human resource management, safety and OSHA compliance, and customer service.
  6. Describe the various aspects of the irrigation, winterizing, and general maintenance required for established landscapes.
