Home Inspector Training

In this course, you’ll examine the goals and values of Ashworth College, time management, creating a realistic weekly and monthly study schedule, the nature and purpose of assessments, how to study effectively to prepare for and take an online examination, and developing the skill sets necessary for success in the twenty-first century. You’ll also review different career paths, certifications, and safe work practices in the building trade and discover how math and science play a big role in the industry.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

• Identify skills needed to be a confident and independent online learner.
• Describe the concepts, technologies, safe work practices, and protective gear used by those in the construction technology field.

This course serves as an introduction to the home inspection profession. You’ll learn about the evaluation process and how state requirements guide the role of the home inspector. You’ll also learn about how different insects can cause wood damage. Finally, you’ll review the inspection points and the common issues associated with attics, exteriors, and roofs.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

• Summarize the roles and responsibilities of a home inspector.
• Identify various wood-destroying insects and infestation control methods.
• Recognize inspection points concerning attics, exterior components of a home, and roofs.

In this course, you’ll continue reviewing the exterior inspection process. You’ll also learn about the inspection points that concern property features, garages, paved areas, basements, and crawl spaces.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

• Describe inspection techniques for drainage systems, retaining walls, landscaping, and deck structures.
• Summarize the inspection process for garages and paved areas.
• Recognize hazards and their causes in relation to basements and crawl spaces.

This course explores the different electromechanical systems that a home inspector will evaluate. You’ll learn the terms, components, practices, and requirements associated with electrical systems, water heaters, HVAC systems, and air conditioners.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

• Identify common violations of home wiring and electrical systems.
• Recognize potential issues with different types of water heaters.
• Explain how to evaluate an HVAC system.
• Summarize inspection techniques related to air-conditioning systems.

This course begins with a discussion of inspection points concerning kitchens and bathrooms and common problems with components such as walls, windows, and electrical and plumbing connections. You’ll study the components of plumbing systems before moving on to review energy conservation and other environmental and health issues that impact home inspection.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

• Recognize basic inspection techniques for kitchens, bathrooms, and various interior components.
• Explain how to evaluate a residential plumbing system.
• Identify health and environmental impacts of different building materials and various insulation, ventilation, and water heating systems.
