Patients may have a variety of problems. Sometimes it’s just a minor sprain or muscle strain. Other times, it’s an injury from an automobile accident that requires lengthy rehabilitation. High school athletes may have sports-related pain, while older patients may have chronic diseases such as arthritis.

Specific tasks may include:

  • Greeting patients when they arrive
  • Escorting them back to the exam room or treatment area
  • Positioning patients on the exam table
  • Listening to and directing patient concerns
  • Ensuring that equipment is ready and supplies are on hand
  • Assisting the doctor during treatment
  • Cleaning the exam room after treatment
  • Filing medical reports in patient charts
