Hotels, Motels & Resorts
Here is a description of some of the positions held by trained, experienced lodging personnel:
- Guest Service Managers
- Guest service managers supervise the front desk, reservations staff, bell and elevator services, door services, concierge, room and valet services.
- General Operations Staff
- General operations staff oversee housekeeping, plant and engineering operations, security and safety, maintenance, laundry services, and parking and valet services.

- Front & Back Office Staff
- Front and back office staff includes the general manager, floor managers, and accountants. Marketing specialists are responsible for attracting guests and corporate/trade groups.
- Resorts, Clubs & Cruise Ships
- These businesses have departments, managers, and staff structures that are very similar to those of hotels.
Restaurants, Inns, Bars & Fast Food Restaurants
There are two kinds of restaurants: those within and those apart from lodging. Each has a similar personnel structure, with more specialized careers occurring in the larger facilities.
- Food Service Staff
- A food service staff includes the restaurant’s general manager, maitre d’, and host or hostess, plus supervisors of food servers, bus personnel, and other attendants. Larger hotels usually have coffee shop and room service managers. In addition to maintaining good customer relations, these managers also set policies for dress, reservations, seating, and service.
- Food Production Supervisors
- Food production supervisors work with the food production manager and the executive chef. They help plan the menus, organize and staff the kitchen, and facilitate food preparation by chefs, cooks, and other production workers.
- Beverage Service Managers
- Beverage service managers operate bars and lounges, as well as the beverage component of the restaurant and banquet departments; they oversee menu planning, service, and reservations like their hotel food service colleagues do.
- Banquet Staff Members
- Banquet staff members provide services for weddings, private parties, conventions, meetings, and catering.
- General Manager & Office Operations
- General manager and office operations personnel are responsible for sales, marketing, advertising, accounting, decorating, operations, security, and staffing.
